The worship of God is to characterize the life of the Christian. This study details what worship is and what it is not, how to worship and why God is worthy of worship.

Introduction
Worship is one of the commonest words among many believers in Christ today. But only a handful of them understand true worship, how it is done, and how often it is to be done. In this study, I dive into this topic from the Bible’s standpoint and show why the entire life of the believer (in Christ) should be the worship of our God.
And if you are not a believer in Christ today, this study applies to you as well. Because I included the best way to worship God by someone who is not currently a follower of Jesus Christ. I will begin the lesson by clarifying what worship is, and what it is not.
What is Worship?
To many people out there, worship is all about singing. But this is an incomplete view of true worship. Though singing good hymns and songs of praises can be part of worship, it is not what worship is all about. In His conversation with the Samaritan woman by the well, Jesus Christ gives us the true worship and how it must be done. Here’s what He says:
John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
In other words, our worship of God must be driven by His nature and His truth. So it’s all about Him, and not us!
To many people out there, worship is all about singing.
God is a Spirit
1 Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
God is not material, but spiritual. He is holy and pure, which means that our worship of Him must come from a pure heart and conscience.
Also, because He is a Spirit, God is everywhere at all times, sees and knows all things. His praises must therefore be pure from the standpoint of that which is not seen, not only in that which is displayed such as our singing, gifts, etc.
Worship in Spirit
True worship is to be from the heart, and can take place anywhere and anytime. The motives behind our worship matter a lot more than what we physically display, do, or declare during worship.
Matthew 15:8-9 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
It is possible for us to worship God physically or religiously when our hearts are far away from Him, or when the motive behind the so-called worship is personal gain or recognition. God knows and sees all that. God is worshiped when all the desires of our heart flow from our love for Him. He is worshiped when our life is lived to honor and please Him.
Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
2 Corinthians 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
Worship in Truth
Worship, though sincere, may not be based on the truth. The Word of God is the truth. Our worship must therefore be based upon our knowledge of Him which we have through His Words. You cannot properly worship the One you do not know, for how would you give the right kind of worship to an unknown person or God?
This is why we are commanded to grow, not only in grace, but also in the knowledge of God:
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
You cannot properly worship the One you do not know, for how would you give the right kind of worship to an unknown person or God?
The Life of Worship
For believers in Christ, worship is to characterize their whole life. All that we do are to be done to the glory of God, including eating and drinking.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
We can even take this further to say that, we worship God every time we say “no!” to the flesh, the world, and the devil. We worship God every time we choose not to lean on our own understanding, but to acknowledge Him in every step of the way (Proverbs 3:5-7).
Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Now that we know what is true worship, how we worship, and how often we are to worship God, it is time to learn why God is worthy of our worship.
Why is God Worthy of Worship?
From Christ’s own idea of true worship, it must focus on who God is, and not the condition or feelings of the worshiper.
Many believers, myself included, often jump into singing and praises, etc. when things are going as planned in their lives. However, the same God suddenly becomes too small to be worshiped when things aren’t looking so good.
The reason for this is because we make worship all about us, and how we feel. We focus our worship on ourselves, rather than God. But it ought not to be so! God is worthy of worship because of who He is, the Almighty God, and not because how I feel.
Worship God, No Matter What
So, when things are working for me, or when they are not, He is still worthy of worship. When I live with perfect health, or when I am terminally ill, He is still worthy of worship. When my finances are in order, or when they are out of my control, He is still worthy of worship.
When my marriage is peaceful, or when it is on a rocky ride, He is still worthy of worship. When my children obey, or when they are rebellious, God is still worthy of worship. When I’m surrounded by loved ones, or when I am hated by everyone around me, God is still worthy of worship.
And by the way, lest you forget, we are created to worship God!
We Worship God for Who He Is
So, if our worship is not to be determined by our condition, but by who God is, how then can we describe Him?
The truth is that the more we know about God and His works, the more we realize that it is impossible for us to fully describe Him. How can you describe an infinite God with a finite mind? In other words, how can you describe the God who is impossible for us to fully comprehend?
This is why in describing Him, I want to focus on two things among many that the Bible reveals about God. These two characteristics are written in the Bible multiple times, especially in the Book of Psalms. That is, God is good, and His mercy endureth forever!
1 Chronicles 16:34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
(See also: 2Chronicles 5:13; 7:3; Psalm 106:1; 107:1; 118:1,29; 136:1). So, even if we cannot know all that there is to know about God, we can talk about what we know today.
The truth is that the more we know about God and His works, the more we realize that it is impossible for us to fully describe Him.
God is Good
This is part of His nature. Those who do not understand this would often attack God for allowing bad things to happen to so-called good people. Or ask questions like, “if God exists and is good, why didn’t He just create a world without evil, a perfect world?”
The truth is, He did, as we are told in Genesis 1:31: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good…”
Everything that God created was good until man sinned and polluted the creation. The point here is that the fact that God created a world that is good shows that He Himself is good.
And speaking of the goodness of God, the fact that you are alive and reading this Post today is a testimony to His goodness. He created, loves and cares for you.
Despite how you feel about His nature or even His existence, God is good. And that is a good enough reason to worship Him and live for Him.
His Mercy Endures
Not many people seem to get this point. God is merciful, and His mercy is inexhaustible. What we deserve from God is His wrath as a result of our rebellion against Him.
Therefore, anything better than His wrath is a blessing for us, and we ought to be thankful for it. This point is clearly stated in the Book of Lamentations as follows:
Lamentations 3:22-23 It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Just think of what God can do in response to our rebellions against Him. He could easily squeeze the whole world between His fingers, and there goes you and I! Yet, He continues to hold back His wrath while He shows us mercy and love.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Saved by His Mercy
Titus 3:5-7 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
If you are saved today, God is all the more worthy of worship in your life. just think of being forgiven a lifetime of sins – past, present, and future.
Also, remember that He promises in His Words that not only has He forgiven those who have come to Him through faith in Christ, He also will remember our sins and iniquities no more.
That’s not say that God suffers from memory loss, but He has chosen to not bring them up against us.
Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Worship God!
I know that all true believers out there will agree with me that God is worthy of our constant worship, regardless of our current conditions. If you are a Christian today, does your life glorify God? If not, you can yield yourself to Him completely today and worship Him with your life.
But if you’re not a believer in Christ yet, God is still worthy of your worship. And the best way to worship Him today is to humbly repent from your sins, and accept the salvation that is offered to you by Jesus Christ. That is life, eternal life offered to you free of charge!
The Bible says that “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” Humble yourself before God, repent from your sins, and trust in Christ for your salvation. This is the first and the biggest step of worship.
The Bible tells us that even angels in heaven rejoice every time an unsaved person comes to faith in Christ.
Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
What a reason to worship!
In Conclusion
Our worship of God must be focused on God Himself, and not on us. True worship must be driven by who God is, and not by how we feel at a point in time.
And more importantly, our entire life is to be the worship of God and not just when we feel like singing. We must do all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Worship God, live to honor Him, for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

If God created a Good world, then why was the Devil in it to entice Adam and Eve to sin?
Hi Janice, thank you for your comment. God indeed created a perfected world. The Bible is clear about that.
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good…” Genesis 1:31. See also: Genesis 1:4,10,12,18,21,25.
God created Adam and Eve (just like you and I) with the ability to make choices. We call it free will. We either make choices to please God or to please ourselves. Often times, we make choices to please ourselves, just like the devil did when he rebelled against God.
The issue is therefore not with God but with us. Adam and Eve could have chosen to believe God. Instead, they believed the devil and disobeyed God’s clear instruction (in Genesis 2:16-17; Compare Genesis 3:4-5).
We are faced with similar situations today. The right question is to ask ourselves: do we make choices to obey and please God or to disobey God and please ourselves?
