The world is looking for peace in all the wrong places and things. But the only source of peace in the world is to be reconciled to God through faith in Christ.

Introduction

Peace in the world? Our world is full of anxiety, depressions, fear, and pains, both physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. This condition is not limited to only the poor and less privileged, for the rich and wealthy also cry in these areas. Many efforts are being made to produce peace in the lives of the people, none of which has succeeded. This is because we are looking in the wrong direction!

But there is hope! You can experience real peace in the midst of the anxieties and pains of this life. The source of that peace is what I have come to share with you today. I hope and pray that it’s a blessing to you.

The Source of Peace in the World of Pain

There is the peace that everyone needs. It is the only thing that can help you rise above the challenges and insufficiency of this life. That is the peace of God, and it is completely absent in the world.

This peace does not come from anything or anyone within our world. Not from having a boatload of money, a world-class standard of living, or a fully funded retirement at 40. Many people may pretend to have it but it is only a pretense.

Real peace can only come from God!

Psalm 29:11 The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The above verses are speaking of the Person of Jesus Christ. He Himself says this:

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Peace Through Christ

The Ephesians Epistle writes this concerning Christ and the Christians:

Ephesians 2:13-18 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 ¶ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Peace Through Reconciliation

True peace comes from being reconciled to God. Our greatest problem is sin against God. And that is also the greatest cause (or source) of pain in this life. For instance, sicknesses and death came as a result of sin against God.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Therefore, the healing and the peace that we need can only come from reconciliation with God. We need to address the problem for the source. Until then, there will be no real peace, regardless of how much we pretend to have it, or how much effort we put into seeking it in the wrong place.

Isaiah 48:22; 57:21  There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.

The Wages of Sins

Our sins make us the enemies of God. We became separated from our God because of those sins. But not only that, the Bible says that we were by nature the children of wrath (Ephesians 2:1-3).

It does not stop there though, the Bible also says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) – that is eternal death or eternity in the lake of fire.

In the meantime, you are separated from any relationship or fellowship with God. That’s like being disconnected from the source of life. Hence the lack of peace in such a disconnected life.

But there is good news, the work of Christ on the cross is a work of reconciliation, that is, reconciliation between us and God.

Christ Paid the Price in Full

Do you remember the verse that says “the wages of sin is death?” It also says “the gift of is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). You deserve eternal death as the wages of your sins. But that was exactly the trouble from which Jesus Christ came to rescue you.

1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Colossians 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.

Through the Cross of Christ, God reconciled the world unto Himself. This is possible because Christ was punished for the sins of the world. With His suffering and death on the cross, Christ paid the penalty for our sins in full (John 19:30). God accepted His sacrifice on our behalf, and anyone who trusts in what He did will be reconciled to God.

Reconciliation is Possible Today

The door of that reconciliation is now open to all who will humble themselves before God and go to the cross (that is, believe in Christ’s death and resurrection) for the forgiveness of their sins.

That is the source of peace with God. And if you have that peace, you have everything, regardless of what is happening or not happening to you in this life.

Romans 5:1-2  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 8:33-34  Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Believe and Live

Through His life, suffering, death and resurrection, Christ satisfied the demand of God for justice and secured your release. He did that by taking your punishment upon Himself.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

If you believe in Him and what He did for you, you will be saved. You will have peace with God as a result of the reconciliation. This is the only source of the peace of God.

Are You At Peace?

Now, here is a question for you: are you at peace with God? Have you trusted in Christ for the forgiveness of your sins? Or are you still at war with God in your sins and rebellion?

Our sins are not sins against people. Although we can do serious damages to others in the process of our rebellion against God, our sins and rebellions are ultimately against God (Psalm 51:4).

And sins against the infinite God requires infinite punishment. It is a debt that you just cannot pay own your own. It would take eternity to do so, in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8). But you do not want to go that route.

You Need Jesus Christ

That is why you need Jesus Christ and His redemptive works. If you’re reading this and do not have the assurance of that reconciliation with God, that is, the forgiveness of your sins through faith in Christ, you need to do something about it today. Because that is the only source of peace.

But if you have the assurance, I congratulate you. Share the good news of the gospel with others, don’t keep it to yourself. May God help us all.
