PREFACE: Over the years, there has been many Bible statements, verses, and passages that have been misinterpreted, they are either partially or completely taken out of context. If you wrongly interpret or take a text in the Bible out of its original context, you will surely misapply it to your life. ‘MISAPPLIED!’ is a series of articles and videos in which I rightly divide those Bible verses. If you love Bible study, you will love Misapplied! Series on Grace Tidings.

Introduction

MISAPPLIED is a series of articles and videos in which I rightly divide many Bible verses, passages, and statements that have been misinterpreted and misapplied over the years. These verses or passages are constantly misused by many people, both saved and unsaved.

Over the years, there has been many Bible statements, verses, and passages that have been misinterpreted, they are either partially or completely taken out of context. If you wrongly interpret or take a text in the Bible out of its original context, you will surely misapply it. And you will basically get a message from the Bible different from what God had intended for you.

Many of these wrongly applied Bible passages have been passed down from generations to generations. What many Pastors do is to simply deliver to their followers the same message which they received from their so-called ‘fathers in the Lord’.

As a result of this, many believers have unknowingly believed many doctrines that are actually contrary to the Scripture. But because they trust their Pastors so much, many don’t even bother to check if any of those things are actually taught in the Bible.

If you wrongly interpret or take a text in the Bible out of its original context, you will surely misapply it.

Where Are the Bereans of Our Days?

In the Bible, the Bereans were considered noble for double checking the teachings of the Apostles. The Bible says that

“…they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11.

Jesus Christ directly spoke to the Apostle Paul. The Apostle delivered the message to the people in Berea. The people investigated the claims of the Apostle before they believed. They search through the Old Testament Scriptures to confirm the Apostles’ teachings.

As we can see from Acts 17, the Apostle did not condemn them for investigating their teachings, rather He commended them and referred to them as being “more noble”.

There is nothing wrong with believers investigating the teachings of their Pastors. Many true preachers even encourage their followers to discover things for themselves in the Bible, “Don’t take my words for it”!

Lots of problems arise when the believers accept everything on the basis of the belief that their Pastors must be right.

What I will be doing in this Misapplied! Series, which will have many episodes, is to address the verses or passages in the Bible that have been taken out of context and wrongly applied. I will first share the wrong application(s) and then show you what the Bible really means by what it says in those passages.

There is nothing wrong with believers investigating the teachings of their Pastors.

Popular but Unbiblical

More than you might think or imagine, there are many teachings believed by many Christians to be right which are actually not. Let me give you some typical wrong teachings that are very popular today:

  1. The blessing of Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3) – Some prosperity preachers and Televangelists say this means that Christians must be wealthy and healthy. That’s not what the Bible means!
  2. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children (Exodus 20:5) – Some have formed doctrines based on this, that God will punish the Christians for the sins of their ancestors. That’s not what the Bible means!
  3. The letter killeth and the Spirit giveth life (2 Corinthians 3:6) – Some say you need more than the Bible if you want to hear from God. That’s not what the expression means!
  4. Work out your own salvation (Philippians 2:12) – Some use this to preach the gospel of works. That’s not the context!
  5. The curse on those who fail to pay their tithes (Malachi 3:9) – Some Church leaders still place their members under this curse today. That is wrong!
  6. The Kingdom of God suffereth violence (Matthew 11:12) – Some say this means you have to fight your way to heaven, leading to the gospel of works. This is totally wrong and contrary to the gospel!
  7. The groanings which cannot be uttered (Romans 8:26) – Some people say this is speaking in tongues. That makes no sense!

These and many other wrong teachings will be address one after another. If you love Bible Study and Biblical expositions, I guarantee that you will love the Misapplied! Series on Grace Tidings.
